Zarguzasht by Mushtaq Ahmad Yousufi: A Complete Book Overview
Zarguzasht is built on the author’s own experience. Yousufi joined Muslim Commercial Bank in 1950, worked for Allied Bank and United Bank, and became chairman of the Pakistan Banking Council in 1977. The offices, the interviews, the bosses, the clerks and the formalities of that world supply the book’s material. Academic writing on the book describes exactly this method: Yousufi takes the habits and qualities of his banking colleagues, their natural attitudes and tendencies, and makes them the subject of his writing, judging their strengths and follies with the same even, affectionate eye.
The book does not follow one storyline. It moves through sketches and essays, each complete in itself. That is why no honest summary can give you “the story of Zarguzasht” as if it were a novel. The pleasure of the book is different: a small oddity of behaviour, noticed sharply, isolated, and magnified until it becomes funny, and then quietly true. Yousufi was famous for drafting and redrafting until the sentence sounded effortless, and that effortlessness is what readers feel on every page.
One reported opening scene shows the method perfectly. The book begins with the author’s interview for his first banking job, meeting his boss, Mr Anderson, whose first questions are: “How are you? Who are you? What are you? And why are you?” Asked which family he belongs to, the young Yousufi answers, “From my own family”, and Anderson thanks him for his honesty. Frank, absurd and completely believable, that exchange is Zarguzasht in miniature.
What Does Zarguzasht Mean?
The title is itself a joke. The Urdu word for autobiography is Sarguzasht. Yousufi changes one letter to give Zarguzasht, rendered in English as “Lost Treasure”. The title promises a life story and immediately warns you, with a wink, that this life story will not behave like a solemn autobiography. It will be a treasure hunt through memory, and the treasure is comedy.
The Style of Zarguzasht: Why It Is Called Yousufi’s Best Work
📖 The Detached-Eye Sketch
Yousufi watches a colleague the way a miniature painter watches a face, isolates one small oddity, and magnifies it until the whole character comes alive.
🏦 The Banking World
Offices, interviews, files and formalities become a stage. The comedy comes from real workplace vanity and formality, not from invented villains.
📜 Verse and Quotation
Persian and Urdu verse, and quotations from Shakespeare, Donne, Proust, Kipling and Mark Twain, open a bank anecdote out into literature and philosophy.
😂 A Wall of Laughter
Yousufi called humour a “wall of laughter” between man and the bitter facts of life. Zarguzasht laughs without hiding those facts, which is why it still feels true.
Mushtaq Ahmad Yousufi: Life and Other Books
Mushtaq Ahmad Yousufi was born on 4 September 1923 in Tonk, Rajasthan, into a well-educated family. His father was Speaker of the Jaipur Legislative Assembly. He studied at Agra University and Aligarh Muslim University, completing an M.A. in Philosophy and an LL.B., and after Partition his family migrated to Pakistan, where his banking career and his writing ran side by side for decades.
His books in order are Chiragh Talay (1961), Khakam Badahan (1969), Zarguzasht (1976), Aab-e-Gum (1990) and Sham-e-Shair-e-Yaaran (2014). He received the Sitara-e-Imtiaz in 1999, the Hilal-e-Imtiaz in 2002, and the Kamal-e-Fun Award in 1999. Ibn-e-Insha said that if Urdu literary humour of the time could be given a single name, it would be Yusufi’s, and obituaries after his death in Karachi on 20 June 2018 called him the Mark Twain of Urdu literature. A warning against a common mix-up: Aab-e-Gum is the later book with Basharat and his family and the English translation Mirages of the Mind. Those characters belong to Aab-e-Gum, not to Zarguzasht.
Who Should Read Zarguzasht, and How
📚 Confident Urdu Readers
The best first Yousufi book for a confident reader, because every sketch stands alone and the prose is the main pleasure.
🌱 Newer Readers
Start with the shorter Chiragh Talay (1961) first, or read Zarguzasht slowly, one sketch at a time, with a dictionary nearby. The classical vocabulary is demanding, and that is normal.
🏙️ Lovers of Old Karachi
The vanished world of mid-century offices and city life is preserved here better than in almost any other book.

Final Verdict
Zarguzasht by Mushtaq Ahmad Yousufi is not a novel to read for a plot, and that is its strength. It is a life remembered with wit: a banker’s offices, colleagues and everyday absurdities, shaped by Urdu’s greatest humourist into sketches that are funny on first reading and truer on the second.
